Obtaining an Individual Status Letter
The Individual Status Letter may be requested after the original due date of the return for the tax year in question.
Occasionally, we will receive a request for written verification for the status of a tax year account as of a certain date. These are commonly referred to as Individual Status Letters (ISL) and may help to obtain a student loan or financing from the California Department of Veterans Affairs. These letters can also show lenders and other interested third parties that the individual has met their California income tax obligations.
An ISL can be requested for the current tax year after the original due date of the return. FTB will process these requests after the return due date. An ISL can also be requested for the prior five tax years.
After October 16, 2023, customers may request an ISL for the current year by logging into their MyFTB account.
Beginning on January 16, 2024, an individual, the parent of a minor child, or an authorized representative, can request an ISL on the public website using an online application. This option does not require an individual to have a MyFTB account; they only need to follow the directions on the application and upload the required documents. To request an ISL using the online application, go to Generate Individual Status Letter Through Self-Service
Once the request is received, a confirmation will be sent to the email address provided. Allow 3 to 5 business days for us to review your documentation and provide a response to the email address provided via secure email.
If you choose not to use the new application, you may still send an email to FTBIndividualStatusLetter@ftb.ca.gov with the following information:
- Student’s (or your) name and address
- Requester’s (or your) telephone number and email address
FTB staff will send a secure email in reply and provide the information needed to complete your request. The requester will be asked to reply via the secure email and provide the necessary documents. Once FTB has the information needed, we will email the Individual Status Letter to you within 3 to 5 business days.
Another way to request an ISL is to schedule a field office appointment by visiting the Office Locations page, and following the instructions detailed in the How to Schedule an Appointment section.
