Beginning 2026, eligible Californians who use IRS Direct File can import their federal tax data into CalFile. Eligible California taxpayers start by filing their federal taxes online directly with IRS using the Direct File tool.
After completing their federal return, California taxpayers will be directed to CalFile with an option to import their federal data. Regardless of their decision to import, eligible California taxpayers can complete their California return in CalFile.
The taxpayer’s ability to import their federal data makes the California filing experience faster and easier to claim valuable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and California’s Young child Tax Credit.
