Account Registration

To view account information, individuals, businesses, and tax professionals must complete a free one-time registration process.

Why register?

¹To view a client's account, tax professionals should have their client's permission and must provide information from the client's tax return.

The registration process

In the registration process, you answer a series of questions and select a user name and password. You can change your user name and password at any time, however, we require you to change your password annually. We will notify you each year when you need to select a new password.

What you need to register

Individuals
  • A valid email address
  • Your social security number
  • Your first and last name from the most recently filed California tax return or the name provided via telephone or FTB form 3533, Change of Address
  • Information from a CA tax return filed in the last five years (original returns only, no amended returns):
    • Year of the tax return.
    • Filing status used on the tax return.
    • CA adjusted gross income (AGI) on the tax return.

If you have not filed a CA tax return in one of the last five years, you cannot register. Exception: CalFile-only individuals may register without having a previous return on file.

Businesses
  • A valid email address.
  • Your company type and account number:
    • Corporation: 7-digit California Corporation ID number.
    • Limited Liability Company (LLC): 9- or 12-digit Secretary of State (SOS) ID number.
    • Partnership: 9-digit Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).
  • Information from a CA tax return filed in the last five years:
    • Year of the tax return.
    • Type of tax return.
    • Income information on the tax return (varies by form type).

If your business has not filed a CA tax return in one of the last five years, you cannot register.

Tax Professionals
  • A valid email address.
  • Your social security number or Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).
  • One of the following ID numbers:
    • PTIN (Preparer Tax Identification Number): 9-digit number.
    • EFIN (Electronic Filer Identification Number): 6-digit number.
    • CTEC (California Tax Education Council): 7-digit number.
    • California CPA (Certified Public Accountant): 5- or 6-digit number.
    • Enrolled Agents: Use your PTIN or EFIN.

If you do not have one of the ID numbers above, you cannot register as a tax professional.
